Gum care and deep cleanings
Cleaning below the gumline for gums that bleed or have pulled back, done by a hygienist over one to four visits.
Gums that bleed when you brush or floss are a sign something needs attention. A deep cleaning removes buildup from below the gumline, where a regular cleaning can't reach.

What happens
- 01
Step 1: Measuring the gums
A hygienist measures the space between each tooth and the gum, and Dr. Casillas reviews the readings and any X-rays.
- 02
Step 2: Cleaning in sections
Melanie or Erasmo cleans one part of the mouth at a time, usually over one to four visits.
- 03
Step 3: Home care
We show you how to clean at the gumline, and which tools may help.
- 04
Step 4: Rechecking
A few weeks later we measure again and tell you what we find. Dr. Casillas will tell you if you need to come more often.
Good to know
Comfort
We numb the area being cleaned, and you can ask for a break at any time. Gums can feel sore for a few days afterward.
If you wait
Gum problems can grow slowly without hurting. If they aren't treated, they can loosen teeth over time. Dr. Casillas explains what she sees in your mouth and what could happen.
Risks and after-care
Gums may bleed and feel sore, and teeth may feel more sensitive for a few days. Results vary and depend a lot on care at home. If your gums need care beyond what we do, Dr. Casillas refers you to a dentist who focuses on gums.
How it's billed
Plans often cover part of a deep cleaning. We check your benefits first and give you a written estimate before we begin.

Questions about gum care and deep cleanings
What is a deep cleaning?
It cleans below the gumline, in sections, usually with the area numbed. It is different from a regular cleaning.
Why do my gums bleed?
Bleeding often means buildup along the gumline. A hygienist and Dr. Casillas can tell you what they see.
Will I need more than one visit?
Often, yes. A deep cleaning is usually done in sections over one to four visits.
Can I go back to regular cleanings after?
Dr. Casillas will tell you. Some people need to come more often to keep their gums steady.
Provided by a general dentist
